Default no-tec to VTEC? newbie question

hey all-

well first i just wanna say hi b/c this is my first post here. i've been looking around for the past couple days and i really like the place  I might as well add that I don't have a car, but I will be getting one within the next two months. Hopefully, I'll be getting a 95 civic (ex) with an already done engine swap (i don't really care what kind of engine it is, but I kinda want a b16a1)

anyway I'm just curious if it's possible to change a stock '95 civic engine to a vtec (still sohc). Can you just buy the vtec head (i've seen em on ebay for $600-$800 ish) and put it on? or is it more complicated than that?

anyway i want your feedback so lemme know what you think.

yah stock 95 civic engine is vtec making about 140 hp or somethign close to that, if u wanted a b16 engine ud be looking for a b16a2 engine 160 hp not a a1 (cable tranny and goes in earlier model civics and crx's) cuz that goes in my car buddy, ur gonna need a hydro tranny, welcome to the board and good luck in finding a car, my lil brother just gave me his 95 civic to strip so im soon gonna have that engine and body with all spare parts sitting up in my garage.

Here is a quickie list I stole off of "automotiveforums.com

D15B - 1.5L SOHC 6th gen Civic hatches and LX
D15B7 - 16 valve 5th Gen Dx engine
D15B8 - 8 valve 5th gen Cx engine.
D15Z- 1.5L SOHC VTEC-E 6th gen Civic HX
D16Z6- 1.6L SOHC VTEC 92-95 Civic EX, 93-97 del Sol Si, 92-95 Civic Si
D16Y8- 1.6L SOHC VTEC 96-00 Civic EX,
D16Y7- 1.6L non-VTEC 96-00 Civic DX

so an EX is vtec, a DX is non vtec, and the CX is also non-vtec, I think, from this list, not so sure about the CX.

The B16 is a very nicely engineered motor, but i've heard the odd person here and there complain about torque envy.

It's fast in a CRX though. heheeh.

If you want to look at a hatchback, they're lighter, so you'll get more out of the same size motor.

I think slapping a vtec head on a non-vtec swap is called a "mini-me" swap.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this guys, thanks.

Right, your future 95 ex would have a D16z6. To put one of these sohc vtec heads on a non vtec block is call a mini-me. Almost any d-series engine can do this. Finding one with a swap done is cool, but I know I wouldn't sell my car after doing all that work unless something was wrong with it, then I'd sell it to some dumb kid... so do a lot more research and make sure you know how to check numbers on the engines, trannies, and all that important stuff so you don't get screwed...

yah u do have torque issues with the b16 but u know what it'll be the same with any 1.6 liter engine, the 1.8 integra engines have more torque but at a higher price (of course) and then there are prelude engines (h22) with a good deal of torque for our light cars but then comes the hastles of installation and understeer with a heavier front end not to mention price.

if you dont have a car, an ex is a good starter motor. it has a billion interchangable parts like trannies, head, pistons, etc, just cause it's a honda. performance parts are also a lot cheaper for a single cam motor for some reason too. also, it's a bit lighter than a b16, so if you're looking to autocross or something, a d16 is a good choice. im trying to set my car up for autocrossing and road racing right now, and it's an ex coupe.
