Default O2 sensor question

I get a "check engine light" only when i hold the gas pedal in one spot for a few mins.... and it bothers me cuz i have to let off then accelerate, let off... etc.. i also don't have a relay for my fan but its been that way since i got the car and it never did it before. i had a bad O2 sensor before and got a USED on from my friend...i was just wondering if anyone knew what was really wrong with my car... also if i pulled out the O2 sensor and plugged up the hole on the downpipe and made it so the sensor is just sitting someplace or not even connected anymore... would i get a CEL? or would i not even run right anymore if i did that... just wondering. thanks for anyone who helps me out!!!!

I don't know what's ACTUALLY wrong with your car, but taking out an O2 sensor, still connected or not, isn't going to help anything. Check your trouble code, if you're throwing one, and then maybe you'll have a better idea as to what you should fix/replace.

well i was thinking if it is the O2 sensor, its not reading right, thats why i get a CEL and if i made it so its in clean air then it won't read anything anymore... just i might be running lean or rich and not knowing about it, but thats where an air/fuel ratio gauge comes in, when i get it, i'll know somewhat if i'm lean or rich. just my idea, but from what you said it won't work.... also is my ecu where i check the code? and is it under my passenger side dash? and would i have to take off the metal cover, and also would i have to get the CEL on once i do all this?

The O2 sensor isn't looking for 'clean air'. It's looking for a small amound of oxygen in the exhaust. Hang it out in the open & it'll see way more oxygen than it should. Besides it won't stay hot, either. Not only that, the ECU is expecting the O2 sensor to react as it adjusts your mixture.

You're better off finding how to read the fault codes on your car. It might not have anything to do with your O2 sensor.

As far as I know (it was true in my 3g 'Lude), yes you should be able to read the trouble codes right off the ECU. There should be a blinking light visible when you pull the carpet away from it, but you shouldn't have to remove any metal parts. As I recall (someone correct me if I'm wrong), the light should blink once to show that it is working, and then it will show the code. A long blink is a "10" and a short blink is a "1." So, 2 long blinks and 3 short ones would be "23." Then consult a service manual (Chilton's, Hayne's, Helms) to see what the code means. If it is the O2 sensor, I think the code is just "1," but don't quote me on that.

ok i got my code(s), it blinks 1 time and then it pauses and then it blinked 15 times at the same pace and i looked up 1 and it was o2 sensor, and then 15 is "Ignition Output Signal" what is that??? but when i have my MSD 6 series ignition on my distributor cap it starts up really hard.. like it putts and then it starts up barely, and when i take off the wire that goes on my distiributor it starts up like a dream. and i have NOT taken out my stock internal coil, cuz i have no idea how to. so i was just wondering if it does just blink 1 time to say its working or not, and also what is that code 15? thanks

Spood is my bro, and he's right as far as a lude doing that. But on your's, the 1 should be the first code. but watch it and it will repeat any codes. With the 15, you might have a bad coil or ignitor. Go pick up a multi meter. You can normally get em for about 20 bucks. But the Chilton's manual has a step by step on how to check both the ignitor and coild to see if they're working correctly.

bakeoff, it has to be my ignitor cuz i have a brand new blaster 2 coil, and it was (i believe) throwing this code before i got my full MSD in. but where is my ignitor? (newbie with ignition stuff) and how much is it going to cost to repair or replace?

What year is the car? If it is newer than 96 than an OBD tester will tell you whats wrong with your car. I was putting in new headers and unplugged my o2 sensor and had started up my car after that to put the car up on jacks, then my check engine light was on so I figured it was the o2 sensor and I plugged it back in and it still had the check engine light so I checked it out with the obd tester and it said that it wasnt reading the o2 sensor so I cleared it out the car's computer and it worked fine.
