Is it ok to shift from 3rd to 5th gear when you're going fast? is there any danger to doing that? I always get critized for doing that, I thought that if naturally going from 5th to neutral is ok why not the reverse? on my beater right now it seems to be ok, no problems whatsoever...yet.

dchanth,
Nope, going from 3rd to 5th causes no problems. If you have a tach, you'll see what it does to the rpms. My only caveat would be that you don't shift to 5th until you know you won't lug the engine.
Keep in mind that gears on a car, like on a bicycle are meant to do one thing; keep the engine running at about the same rate. This is how you get better gas mileage as well.

well it wouldnt exactly save gas, because either you have to rev high in third to get it to run smooth in 5th, or you have to be in 5th gear too low, which will cause you to press the pedal even more down which is bad on gas mileage as well,
