Default s80 in replace of y80?

Can you replace the original y80 (95 GSR) transmission with the s80 (95 Type-R) transmission. Now, im pretty sure you can, but I was just wondering if the type r transmission with the lsd would fit. I plan to put a supercharger on my gsr and I think it would be a good idea to have an lsd. What would be the best setup for this on a budget? Just get the type r tranny with lsd or possibly put an act clutch kit in the y80 tranny and throw in an lsd in there too. Im not too familiar with acura transmissions so please if you could help, I would much appreciate it.
Thanks,

I don't believe there were any ITRs in 95, but yes, an R tranny will swap right on. If you get a 96 spec, it'll come with a 4.40 FD and LSD. The 99 spec comes with a 4.785 FD and LSD. Both are hydro, so either one is equally feasible. As for cost-effectiveness, it would cost about $300 for a clutch, and about $800 for a Quaife LSD for your GSR tranny. A 96 spec ITR tranny would be about $1200, and a 99 spec would be about $1500. The OEM LSD in those trannies is pretty decent, but the Quaife is considerably stronger and will ultimately hold more power.

I for one, am very impressed with your knowledge. Thanks for the information. So, it would be more beneficial to just build my stock gsr tranny?

That would be a judgement call. If you want shorter gearing, and don't plan on making more than about 250-300whp, then an R tranny would probably suit you well. If you like your GSR gearing,a nd want something that will hold all the power you throw at it, get a Quaife. In either case, you would probably still want a new clutch.

True that. Is the gear ration on a s80 longer than the gsr's? If so, by how much? Similar to ls? Also, would you suggest replacing with an ls w/ quaife and act clutch? I was just wondering which would be better for the SC application. Thanks for the info man. Like swimming through gold coins.

The gears on the S80 are a bit shorter than the Y80. The GSR box is actually a pretty nice compromise between the short gears of the other VTEC transmissions and the non-VTEC boxes.

I would go with a nice clutch and a Quaife, in the GSR box.
