Make sure your ignition timing is near stock specs.

well, I shot my timing today and was off by about a normal finger length. NOT GOOD. Well, I adjusted it and its on target now. Lovely feeling. No more bog outs or lobing out. Keeps its idle now.

if you are blowing black smoke you are burning oil and if you are blowing white and bluish smoke you are running rich

I can back that idea because I know my car is running rich. I have a swapped gsr into a civic. I have to get an aftermarket adjustable fuel pressure regulator so that I can lower my fuel ratio that way I run better and take the risk away of detonating the head. Also, how exactly do you detonate the head? I ran rich tonight racing 4 times and nothing happened. I would suggest to you that you somehow check the fuel pressure and make sure its not off. Also, take your intake off and while reving your motor at around 3 grand, spray carb cleaner into your throttle body. This should help clean carb build up if you have any. That can cause smoke sometimes. I know I have carb build up like a mother because I put new denso spark plugs in, idled the car for 3 minutes and took them back out and they were covered in black crap. I mean the way a very old spark plug looks. Its crazy!
dude you've got it all wrong. running rich will DECREASE the risk of detonation by cooling down the combustion chamber temperatures with excess fuel. running lean will increase it since there will be less fuel to help cool down your CC. detonation is caused by heat and improper ignition timing.

if you're fouling plugs in 3 minutes you've got some serious problems, also.. if that black crap is kind of gummy it means you've got oil leaking into your combustion chamber which would explain the bluish smoke (which you think is because you're running rich)

my lawnmower spits blue smoke

anyway though, i thought burning oil was white smoke, my friend's 94lx spits white smoke and he has to add oil pretty often, and i was also told that white smoke is burning oil, what is white smoke then? or is that also burning oil?

May the lord (or whoever you believe the higher being is...) Show u guys the truth. lol someone label this thread "We have everything backwards and that's okay."

Here's the deal:

Blue smoke == Oil
White smoke == coolant in most cases unless u pissed in the gas tank or something stupid.
Black smoke == Running rich... and if it's smoking... it's not running a little rich... it's running pretty damn rich.

And if you are running rich and detonating, your air/fuel is not the problem here are a few things to check:
1. Check timing
2. Make sure u didn't deck the block or be like me and mill the head .040
3. Go to the gas station and get some 93 octane and a warm cup of joe.

lol thank you for your time and please... please... if u are unsure about what color smoke means what on your car... don't post up what u THINK the problem is cuz u're just adding to the problem.

O yea... and the thing about milling the head... reason why u be careful about that is it raises your compression... Now... if u don't already have a high compression engine you'll probably be okay but I had 11.5:1 before and the head was milled .040 and I had to get a thick gasket because otherwise it would have been 12.98 with a stock gasket... which meant I would be filling up at the airport ;-)
