Default Vtec controller questions

i know that there are apexi svfc or vfc... but i don't need anything that fancy. my friend has a SPOON vtec controller of some kind... and it's just a nob... not much needed to tune. it was pretty much set. however, spoon doesn't make one for my car... so i was wondering if anyone can tell me which other ones i can get?

A'PEXi V-AFC, Fields SFC-VTEC.

Either one will work with your car. You won't see much of a performance gain with just an intake and exhaust but you'll get a nice bling bling screen if you get the V-AFC.

The SFC-VTEC has a nifty shift buzzer

i have a 99 prelude with just an intake.... if I were to get the apexi controller do you just plug it in to the ecu or how do you go about installing it? can you change the vtec RPM engagement on the fly on the controller or do you have to do something else? and what is the lowest RPM's you can run vtec at on stock cams without it lagging, 4600?

The AFC splices into your ECM harness, tapping some wires and bypassing others. You can change settings on the fly via the control buttons. You will need to tune it on a dyno to find the right settings for your application. You'll do more harm than good if you just drop your VTEC engagement point and expect it to work well. If all you have is an intake, it might not be worth the dyno time just to tune for that.

A V-AFC costs like $330. An hour on the dyno with someone who knows what they're doing tuning the V-AFC runs anywhere from $100 to $200. You don't need to "optimize" the fuel curves if you just have the standard bolt ons. Honda motors in general are tuned pretty close to peak efficiency and you have to open them up to get significant gains. The stock ECU can handle the little bit of extra air intake and little bit less exhaust back pressure from the typical i/h/e setup just fine.
