Default Timing belt slipped; engine OK (sort of)

The timing belt slipped on my 98 Accord EX 4 cyl with 150K miles (The belt had been replaced at 105K). I was going 70MPH on the highway, everything was fine and dandy, and then all of all sudden the engine immediately dies.

The repair shop (different from the one that first replaced the belt) found that the belt was still on but it had slipped 5 teeth. There was a deep groove in the belt, presumably from a tensioner bolt that backed out and cut into it. The bolt was M.I.A.

The mechanic compression tested the motor and all cylinders were acceptable (Although #3 was 145 vs 160 in the other 3 cylinders).

After replacement of the timing belt, balancer belt, tensioners, and water pump, the engine is now significantly louder, particularly as RPMs hit 2500 and higher. It's like a droning, bus-engine sort of noise (Sort of like an exhaust leak). After taking it back, they determined that that one of the belts was too tight and made the necessary adjustments. It's a little better, but not much (There had been a whining noise too, which this seemed to fix). However, the loud noise is still there and it is really annoying at highway speeds.

The engine idles smoothly and quietly, seems to have the same power it did before, and gas mileage has not dropped. I'm taking it back tomorrow to have them look at it again.

Any ideas???

Wow 5 teeth huh, check to see if you have any bent/damaged valves. You might get away with 2 teeth with little or no damage but 5 might be pushing it. It shouldn't be running louder than before so I would definately have that checked and in the meantime don't push the car hard.

Get a leakdown test done, it will better diagnose bent valves.
