Default 92 4 Door Accord Problems

Hi

I have a 92 Accord, 4 Door Automatic, 160,000 miles. A couple days ago my engine felt like it was driving kind of rough so I thought I was low on oil. I checked the oil and the level was good. i then checked the transmission fluid and that was good to. My concern though is that the car is changing gears slowly. I took it into the local shop to have them look at it and they said I need new spark plugs, new spark plug cables, and a new filter. They quoted me a price of $400. So my questions are:

1. Would changing those things really make a difference for my slow changing gear problem? I think this type of problem would be a transmission, or catalyt converter problem?

2. Is it worth $400 to change those things, I mean cant I change those things easily myself?

Anyway, I am not one new to forums, and am happy I found your forums, so I will be looking for directions on how to change the above mentioned. If anyone can help me by answering my questions, and pointing me in any useful directions I appreciate it.

TIA
James

Wow $400.00 for that, what a smack in the face!!! Dude or Dudedette you need to go back to that place and if your a guy punch them in the face and if your a gal, kick em' in the "other place" LOL. Seriously go to Pep Boys, Checker, Auto Zone, Napa, somewhere in your local area. Tell them what kind of car you have and they will look up all that shit for you.

Air Filter - $15-25
Spark Plugs (NGK) - $8-30
Spark Plug Wires (NGK) - $60-75

Basically Easy installs aswell.

Air Filter - Find the big black box, It should have 4 metal clamps around it, pop all 4 of the clamps off of the plastic tabs that are molded to the plastic black box (This box is most likely on the passenger side, up near the headlight). Now just pull the top of the box off of the lower section, which contains the air filter. Now just pull out the air filter from the lower part of the box (shouldn't take much strength). Just lay your new air filter the same way your old one was laid inside the box. Now basically just put the top back on the box and clamp those 4 clamps back on and Wa-laa! Your done with the air filter.

Spark Plugs & Spark Plug Wires - Before you do anything look at your engine where the 4 spark plug wire seat into the top, now from left to right lable each wire 1,2,3,4. Now starting with #1 wire, follow it till the end which is where it ends at the distributor. Mark somewhere next to that terminal that the wire connects to a 1. Now do the same with the #2 wire, and then the #3 wire, and then the #4 wire, and now you have a diagram so that when you take the wires out you will know where the new wires go.
Ok so now that the drawing, markings, diagram is done you simply un-hook and take off all 4 of the spark plug wires, now you will notice there is still 1 more wire, that is the ignitor wire. Just go ahead and un-hook that wire from the distributor and then the ignitor. Now get your new ignitor to distributor wire and go ahead and put that wire on and your done with one wire. now get a wratchet and a long enough extension, and depending on your car you will need either a deep 14-18mm socket to remove the spark plugs. Anyways once you are ready simply get the wratchet with socket and put it down over the spark plug, and turn counter-clockwise (you might have to put your back into it in order to get em' started) and just keep turning till you notice it seems like there out of the engine block. Now heres where it gets a little tricky without a special or random tool. too get the plug out of that tiny deep hole you can do a few things, use needle nose pliers, magnet bar, screwdriver with duck tape on the tip, long tweezers, if you don't have any of these things then be creative don't think too hard just think simple and you'll come up with something. Basically after you get it out, just drop down in the new plug and tighten it, but not too tight just get it hand tight and then give a little snug at the end. Now just do those simple steps to the next 3 cylinders and you will be done with the spark plugs. Once your done with the spark plugs, now your ready to put on the spark plug wires, simply get each new wire out and notice they should each have a number on them (if you bought the NGK wires anyways) if not just match up all 4 wires and basically the shortest wire will go to the first hole, 2nd shortest to the second hole, etc... Now just set the ends down in the spark plug holes and go back to the drawing or diagram if you didnt write the numbers on the distributor cap and remember left to right on the engine, so start with #1 push the boot of the wire down onto the spark plug at the engine, then grab the other end of the wire and push the boot on the #1 terminal that you had labled, now just do that to the next three wires and Wa-Laa you are now officially done goodjob! and look you only spent like 90-110 bux damn now thats a savings that even Wal-Mart can't roll back on!!! LOL goodluck man, or gal.
