Default question about vtec head swap

just wondering if my car would still run and be drivable with a d16a6 block and d16z6 head with the stock ecu? its a 89 crx si. now i have the p28 ecu but i dont have the conversion harness to go with it and i dont have the extra 200 for the harness right now so i was just wondering if my engine would stumble and be stupid without the whole set up or if i could just plug harnesses in and get up and go.
