96 Accord problems
Hey Mike, I have the same car and the same problem. Two weeks ago my car ran hot, CEL came on and radiator started smoking. Pulled over filled with water and made it home. Step dad put that radiator repair kit on and we thought everything was fine. My mom drove my car about twenty miles to my sister house and it ran hot again. We waited several hours filled it with water and drove home. Of course it ran hot again but we had to make it home so I was almost there and I hit the gas and a sound came out like a piece of sheet metal was scraping the ground. We got it home and five days later my uncle replaced the radiator. The car worked great for a day but then it started to turn over slowly. The next morning it wouldn't turn over at all. Sounds like its trying to but cant. My uncle pulled up the spark plugs and all but one had oil and water on them. He said I had a blown head gasket and soon I'd need a water pump and timing belt. I'm close to shedding tears and I have no idea how much this is gonna set me back with school starting next week. Do you have any idea if these are my only problems, can I handle the problems one at a time, and how much the average price is for each one?
Hey,
If you and your Dad are mechanically inclined, u could prob do all the work yourself, and pay like $200 tops in parts...
If u pay to get a timing belt done, it is a MUST to replace water pump also, and u definitely need a water pump if yours was making noise and overheating.
Basically, what u did is REAL BAD...
U drove the car while it was overheating, which is not advisable, because it will damage the engine, if kept running. U say u drove it home, and just as it was about home, u heard a metallic noise?? could be a couple things...
When u ran it while it was overheating, the steam, which is a superheated vapor, tried to escape through your headgasket, which basically mates the head to the block. This damaged your head gasket, which caused water to enter the combustion chamber, hence why u have water and oil on your spark plugs. Your Uncle was right, however, when a headgasket is damaged, the head could show signs of being warped, because the head is aluminum, it can warp when subjected to superheated steam.
Don't sweat it, it could cost upward of $1000 to get it fixed at a dealer, but it's the labor that's expensive, cause it's time consuming.
Get the parts, get a manual, and get to work, u only got a week before school.
P.S.
Hopefully the head isn't warped, if so, u might be able to get it milled, if it's not millable, u might have to get a new/used head.
Hope this helps
