Default B18C1 vs. B18C5

Hey Folks, I'm not sure if this should be in the hybrid forum or in here, but since they're both Integra engines, I figured I'd start here.

I'm planning on doing an engine swap next year and I'm looking at either the B18C1 or B18C5, with the possibility of a turbo kit in the future. I'm aware of the basic differences between the engines (internals, specs etc.) but I'd like to know just how much power each engine can withstand with it's respective stock internals?

For example, if I were to buy a B18C5, and turbocharge it to the point where I need to upgrade internals, would it not be a better investment (and more reasonable) to buy a B18C1 and upgrade?

As well, how much HP can stock GSR or ITR axles handle?

Thanks for any help!

I'm not 100% but it's been my understanding that you'd be better off with a b18c1..

b18c1 = less horses off the bat (170), but can handle a lot more boost in the long run.

b18c5 = more horses off the bat (190), but handles less boost stability..

I don't know anything about the axls, and i'm sure someone'll either say i'm on the right track, or correct my statement shortly, good luck either way.

Axles depend on how you treat them and various other mods. With some nice stiff suspension, slicks, hard poly motor mounts, etc. you can toast your axles with stock horsepower if you launch hard.

get a b18c1 and save yourself some cash. then put that into building it for boost.

Keeping your stock internal won't let you boost very much. Or you'll need gas with very high octane...
Compression:
B18c1 USDM = 10:1
B18c1 JDM = 10.6:1
B18c5 USDM = 10.6:1
B18c5 JDM = 11:1

Boosting your engine with a turbo create more compression and more compression result detonation if you don't have the right gas octane. For example, if you put a turbo into the b18c1 USDM you'll be able to boost 7-8 PSI on 94 octane (maybe 91 with fire retard...). If you want more boost you have to change your piston for lower compression pistons...
So putting a turbo into a type-r with stock pistons and normal gas is bad.
A b18c1 at 7-8 psi would be great. I have a 98 GSR and the performances are very impressive since it's a 1.8 liter. Adding a turbo at only 7-8 psi would make it a pocket rocket.
