Default 93 VTEC Running too lean ?

Hi there, just picked up a Honda Civic VTI (1993) and has a few known problems the main one being an inconsistant (not rough) idle and goes from between 500 rpm to 1500 rpm. I guess the mixtures a bit lean too as the car seems a liitle hesitent (no pinking tho') and gets a bit hot when driven hard !
The history of the car is the dizzy fell apart but still allowed the car to run and has had an inexperienced (AA) man play with it. I don't know the engine at all but have fiddled with engines in the past adjusting mixtures etc so feel I'm fairly compitent if someone can point me in the right direction

Have you checked the ignition timing?

Is it throwing any codes at all?
