97 Accord VTEC Sudden Oil Spill
HELP!!
I have an Accord with the VTEC engine with 81,000 miles. Today I was driving and the oil light started flashing. I stopped and looked under the car and a HUGE puddle of oil was forming from the front of the engine. I immediately shut it down and called a tow.
Can someone help with what might have happened? There has never been any oil leaks and there was no oil on the floor of the garage before I left.

There is a TSB (technica servicel bulletein regarding this. There was a problem on some of the 5th gen (94-97) accords and their drain plug, in rare cirumstances it would basically just fall out.
The dealer should fix this free of charge, sorry I don't know the exact TSB# but back when I had my Accord I got a little letter about it.

Mofo is close the problem is the balancer shaft seal which should have been clipped. Now you need a new seal and a clip. Please take the car to honda and expect not to have it for a day or two. They will repair it for free. DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR!!!!!
Since you also have 81,000 miles I recommend that you replace both your timing belt and water pump at this time because Honda will only charge you for the parts at this time becuase the labor involved is teh same for the belt and the seal. This translates to a savings of several hundred dollars.
My own car was clipped. My bro's 96 blew the seal on the way to the dealer to get clipped. Expect the dealership to be pricks about getting the job done in less than 2 days and don't plan on getting a renter/loaner despite the fact that this is a Honda **** up. This was my experience. PS HONDA SUCKS!!!!
good luck

What kind of angry people are you?
Thank you all for the help. It was the balancer shaft seal. Honda cheerfully replaced the seal, installed the retainer and replaced the Timing belts because they were sprayed with oil. ALL AT NO CHARGE!!!!
I took it in, got it back the same day. HONDA IS GREAT. Merecedes would not do something like that. Nor the Ford that I had. I am definately buying a Honda next time.
