Default urgent: 2000 Honda CR-V engine check light on

This morning I found the engine check light on, and not sure what happen, I stop one time, and let it cool down for about 10 minutes, but no difference, it still light on, please give me some suggestion or refer to URL how to know a little more about the engine check light on, and how to get the error code.
If possible, somebody on Long Island (New York) can recommend the good place for the engine check and repair, I knew my friend has been charged over $800 in Honda dealer, it is too much.
Thanks.

I dont know if they have Autozone in ur area but they will do a free diagnosis ...
(not really) they just hook up this little device to ur fuse box and get the error code and let u know why that light is coming on..

Default thanks for quick reply, one more concern

Thanks for your quick reply, and here I have one more concern, this morning, when I found the engine check light on, I don't stop it right away (on highway), it lasted about 8 minutes, then I poll my car along the service road, cool it down, restart, same problem.
Just curious whether this will damage the engine, and any good suggestion for one more ride to home this afternoon. By the way, I checked the local AutoZone, they do free check the ECL.
Thanks.

Hey,
Don't worry too much about the check engine light, it's designed to come on when some various part of your emmission control system is not functioning correctly, such as O2 sensor, which may be why ur friend paid so much at honda. It will not damage your engine at all, just watch your temp and oil pressure gauges (oil light if no gauge), to make sure they are normal...
Also, if you purchase the Hanes/chilton manueal for your car it will tell you how to read the engine codes urself, or maybe look on google. I know for 92-00 civics/crv you can check codes by jumping the 2-prong connector with a small wire or safety pin, near the ECU in the passenger foot well... the engine light will blink in sequence the code, then u look it up in book or online.
Hope this helps, but DON'T worry it won't hurt your car, maybe just get less performance and gas mileage.
Later,
Mike

Just to add to what others are saying, it's ok to drive if the check engine light comes on and stays on. However if it begins flashing turn the vehicle off or you may damage the cat.

Default P0420: catalytic system not efficiency below threshold

The ECL is P0420, and Autozone stuff told me it need not worry about the error message unless need performance improvement.
But the question is that two days later, the light is on again, I just don't want to live with it, it may hide some potential problem. So if the catalytic system need some work, please advice what may need to be done, whether it is possible to under warranty (2000, 63Kmile), or usually how much it cost to replace the catalytic system.
Thanks for any suggestion.

It's a covered item, cat. converters are covered for 8yrs/80k.....
I'm in cali which is usually longer than federal rules so I would call your local dealer before just bringing it in. Whatever you do DO NOT let them make you pay labor or any diag....I've heard ppl on here say they have had to pay labor or diag. and the whole repair is warrenty.

p0420.
Catalyst system efficiency below threshold.
Either you have an exhaust leak or you need a new TWC ( three way cat )
This is assuming there were no other codes such as a primary o2 sensor code or such...
