Yes a lot of people have built a sohc motor. Putting a d16 head on a d15 block isn't building a motor though.
Is it worth building?? depends on your goals.

I know several SOHC VTEC that have run 11's and below. It is possible. Getting any car that fats is expensive so what's teh difference.

I am building a D16Y8 right now, but I own a shop and have 2 core take out engines. They are an OBD II Version of the Z6. The problem with building a SOHC VTEC is - it cost (except the cams twice as much) the same amount of money to build a SOHC as it does to build a DOHC. The rods, pistons, bearings, etc. are the same price. The SOHC engines have a breathing problem with the smaller valves, so bigger valves price is going to make up the difference for buying that 2nd race cam on a DOHC engine, now the price is equal. I think about this all the time while ordering parts on the y8 build. But like I said I already have two Y8 Engines laying around. The main problem with them is weak rods, and the oil pan is only 3.5 qts, if the engine is low 1 qt oil and youhit VTEC and hit the high RPM's the rod bearings fail and the rods break. If your building one get some Eagle H Beam rods, a bigger oil pan, and a new oil pump, run good oil and change it every 3k miles, and an oil cooler realy helps.
I am using the ZEX Cam, Eagle Rods, JE SRP Pistons, bigger valves, new Honda oil pump and porting it, external oil cooler (adds a extra qt oil) t3/t4 turbo with intercooler, porting and polishing the head and intake manifold, Skunk2 OBD II TO OBD I Harness, and a P28 ECU with Hondata and Dyno Tuned at Dynotune in Madison WI (The owner is a member here).

The way I see it is, if ya have the D15, why not spend the 350.00 on a 16Z6 head to get your mini-me???? Heck, it's like an extra 20 good horsepower...

Like I said, your going to spend the money and it is a lot cheaper to build a SOHC VTEC considering the price to buy a DOHC engine if you do not have one. I just bought the DOHC because it looks cooler. Knowing what I know now i would have just built my D16Z6. I am still banging around that idea still. I have a whole D16Z6 longblock in the garage.
