Default Swaping The 90dx

Hi Im new in this forum, and Im wandering what is involved in doing a motor swap in my 90DX.... Im goin B16. I want to turbo it, so how hard is it gona be to fit everything under the hood? Should I go with the JDM siR 1? or USDM? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Also is there any differance between a b16a1 and a b16a2 block?:dunno:

Default What's up?

I highly recommend you go to a search engine like Google.com and do a search for B16A and you'll find lots of good info, more than I can type in a few minutes. Just some quick pointers.

You'll need a mount kit to mount a B-series engine into a EF ('88-'91) Civic. HASport, Place racing and others make them. Do some research and find which one will work best for you. Contact the manufactures and tell them your intentions (turbo) and see what they recommend. I can tell you everything is going to be tight, but it can all fit.

As for the B16A's, there are a lot of differences. The B16A or B16A1 (same thing, just depends on who's talking) is the first gen B16A imported from Japan. This is the motor you want. It will have the wiring harness, ECU and tranny you can use (pre OBD and cable operated). First gen B16A's are usually around $1500-$2000. The B16A3 is the Del Sol DOHC motor and sometimes called the 2nd gen B16A's that are imported from Japan. You could use this motor (which has a little higher compression in JDM trim) but you will need to convert it to pre-OBD, find a pre OBD ECU and a cable tranny, it's also usually about $2500-$3000. The B16A2 is the '99+ Si motor. You could also use this, but have the same issues with the OBD system and tranny as before. These are usually more expensive simply becuase they're newer. For your application, I would recommend a B16A1, first gen JDM engine, make it easier on you. Make sure you do plenty of research and know everything beforehand to avoid paying to much money for stuff you don't need or getting stuck halfway through a swap. Seeya.

Ahh c'mon Seth....you know the answers to these questions. They have been asked a million times on the other board.

The easiest motor to use in your case is a JDM 1st gen B16 (it's already set up for a 88-91 Civic)

Yes the turbo will fit no problem

There is no B16a1, only B16a (JDM B16 Motors), B16a2 (99-00 SI motor) and the b16a3 (94-97 DOHC Del Sol motor)

And the only differences in these blocks was the compression ratio. Some B16's are 10:1 compression and the earlier ones were 10.2:1 (these would be the 170hp B16's). Other than that all the blocks are the same. Oh yeah also earlier B16's also didn't use crank girdles like the GSR and ITR motor always had.

A crank girdle is a piece that bolts to the bottom of your engine block that basically ties the bottom of the engine together to help combat flex and make the block stiffer. I didn't know that the first gen B16a's didn't have them, but then again, I've never torn one apart either. Definately a good thing to have, especially with a high rpm motor.

As for california issues, I would recommend you contact the place you'll take your car for it's inspection to get the most honest answers. Some say people online say "no JDM engines!" and other say it's cool as long as you have all the smog equipment. I'd get it straight from the horses mouth. Seeya.

I've been to the ref. JDM is ok as long as it uses USDM smog equipment.
