Default Need help about using ECU P72 with a B16A2 swap?

I got a 97 CIVIC EX with 99 SI B16A2 swap, the car is right now using a 96 GSR P72 ECU since it plug right into the ecu harness (still using the EX harness) but a friend told me not to use the p72 ecu b/c the gsr has two stage manifold. What does that mean? He also to me to use p28 to reprogram it to DOHC spec and get ODB II to ODB I conversion harness. My quesiton is that can I use p28 (sohc vtec) ecu with DOHC motor? IS there any other ecu that I can use in my car that will make it other? let me know alll the info on the ecu's thats the best for my application...thanks guys

if that P72 hasn't been chipped at all you could sell it for a good price. I suggest getting the ECU that you know will work with the B16A (not sure what the code is off the top of my head). That way you know that you won't have problems and that it will work like it was built to.

If you don't have a contact for a new ECU, email my buddy Brian Wong at bwsf@hotmail.com he'll have it.

Hope it helps.

Either use a b16 ecu from a 97 del sol vtec, or a 99-00 SI. Or you can get an obd2-obd1 adaptor harness, get a p28 ecu chipped to DOHC vtec specs, and with an aftermarket chip.

the ecu can definately effect performance. I'm not sure about the different civc ecus. I only have experience with the P07 and P72 or else I'd help you out more man.

Yes, the 96-98 civic plugs (obd2a) is different from the 98-99 (obd2b) plugs. There are major differences that are beyond a simple re-pinning exercise.

I don't know the shape of the '96-'97 Del Sol ECU's, but if they would fit, those would probably be your best bet. A P72 will definately affect your performance. A B18C1 does have a dual stage manifold, basically two paths for air to go, the computer can open and close one at around 5700 rpm, but that wouldn't really affect you. What's killing you is the B18C1's VTEC changeover point is at 4400 rpm, while your B16A cams are designed for a mid 5000 rpm changeover. You've probably got a big hole in your midrange pull because your forcing the engine to run on the big cams when they're not designed to operate that low.

You could use a P28 that's been reprogrammed to control a DOHC VTEC engine, but you will loose your knock sensor functionality and maybe others depending on what program you use (avoid any that raise or remove your rev limiter unless you've upgraded your valve train to handle the extra rpm's). There also may be legal issues using an older computer in a newer car, but those depend on your local laws. I'd try to see what you can find out about a '96+ Del Sol and if that computer would work first. Even if you can find one in a salvage yard somewhere, have them describe the shape of the ECU connectors and see if they are the same as a '96-'98 Civic (sorry, but I don't know if they are or not). Good luck.
