Default 2001 Accord Excessive Oil Consumption

I have a 2001 Accord Sedan 2.3 litre, 4 cylinder with 100,000 km. The engine is burning (not leaking or PCV problem) oil at a rate of 1 litre every 1,200 kilometres. I am presently in a battle with my dealership to get this fixed under warranty...

Is this a common defect?

The dealer says that "the problem is due to sticking oil control rings caused by carbon build-up that newer Hondas are prone to if the oil is not changed often enough". I don’t buy this because carbon build-up comes from fuel, not oil, and I can’t see how more frequent oil changes would reduce the rate of carbon build-up.

Sounds more like Honda got a bad batch of oil control rings that are soft or prone to breaking.

Comments please!

Thanks in advance,

What??? So you pretty much admit to not changing your oil often....hmmm...lets just run the car for 20k miles and not change the oil...

Dirty Oil WILL lead to carbon/gunk build up......

Oil happens to be the life line of your vehicle, it has to be changed regularly. If you dont change it regularly, the vehicle shall not last.

Thanks. Sometimes the oil was changed every 5000 kms but I missed a few. I don't think this would cause the high oil consumption; it has been there since the car was new but Honda consider 1 litre per 1500 km to be "Normal". Severe BS IMHO.
