Default Does a new HU affects central locking?

Sorry, wrong section. Have reposted.

Hi all, new to this posting board.

I just bought my first car, a 97 Civic CXi, not sure what the the overseas equivalent is, I would guess the CX I've read about. It's 1.6L non power windows or doors, no major mods (yet!).

My question is: I'm about to get a new head unit (amongst other things) put in and I read that the Honda factory central locking has electrical connections to the stock radio unit (it's a tape deck in mine *shudder*). Is this true?

I'm not sure if this affects me anyway, because my car was only key entry from the factory and I've just had an alarm system fitted, which connects to the central locking system I got put in at the same time. I expect the aftermarket central locking doesn't know or care about the radio... but just in case, I thought I'd ask the experts...

Do I need to tell the audio installers anything like "I've got central locking, it's connected to the radio..." or.. it's not a concern? I've seen sites which talk about keeping the stock radio in behind the dashboard and splicing the wires off to the new head unit, so the factory central locking still works.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I have a 2003 civic with the same thing. I was told to keep the door lock and alarm intack i had to buy a speciale harness and they would drop the old cd player behind the dash and still keep the other stuff working. The harness for my car is almost $100

Yup, from what I understand (at least on teh 6th gens) you need a Y adapter harness and need to keep your OEM headunit.

Acutally I remember someone saying that the power for the remote entry is pulled from another location on OBD2B civics (99-00) and thusly, you don't need a Y harness. So, that is woth investigaing, but It's unconfirmed.

hi all,

i have a 2003 accord EX-L 4 cyl auto. i have installed a Sony MP3 head unit and have disconnected the factory radio plug. I used the factory plug for the Sony Head unit.

this is a recap of what works and what doesn't work after that install:

doesn't work -
radio/heater/AC display including lights for dials and most switches
works -
heater/AC switches and dials and all controls (just no display)
switch lights - recirc, def, rear def, auto, indicator lights work
remote entry and everything else works

Yes, on 96-98 the HU ran the keyless entry. If you plan on keeping the stock keyless and want an aftermarket HU, you need the Y harness so you can keep the stock HU behind the dash. :uber gay: IMO.

I have a 96, but with an aftermarket security system. So that rule doesn't apply to me. When I installed my HU I received the Y adapter from Crutchfield for free so I never knew those Y adapters were so expensive. If you have any other questions, PM me.

wow...you got screwed. ONLY 95-98 Civics needed that T-harness for retaining the factory radio. This was ONLY needed if you are sporting factory keyless entry and wanted to keep it working. Otherwise, there is nothing to worry about except for the dome light not working.

The dome light thing can be fixed by placing a jumper between two wires on the green-colored socket that goes into the OEM radio. The two wires are Light Green/Red and Light Green/Black. Connect these two and the dome light works normally again....no t-harness.

Again, this ONLY applies to 95-98 Civics.

PS: I work at Circuit City roadshop, and we only charge an extra $5 for the t-harness, and we've done so many of these that we don't charge any extra labor either.
