GSR alternator w/ 96 DX wiring harness

Default GSR alternator w/ 96 DX wiring harness

I'm swapping a 98 GSR into my 96 DX coupe. I've run into a problem with the wiring harness. The GSR alternator requires a 3-pin clip and my DX wiring harness has a 4-pin clip. Has anyone else run into this problem? This topic hasn't really been covered..... well I haven't found any threads about it anyways.
Which wires would I have to splice if I got a GSR alternator clip?

I haven't really heard about anyone running into this problem? Do 3 of the colors match up on the two harnesses? That would be my guess? Sorry I don't have more info.

I found the reason for this problem. My car is from the US but my GSR engine is from here in Canada.

US = 4-pin
Canada = 3-pin

I have to cut and disregard one of the wires.

Oh, okay. I didn't realize Canadian engines were any different? Hmm, learn something new every day. I'm glad you got it all worked out. Get it running yet?

Hopefully by Saturday, I need to go get that connector first, but everything else worked out fine. It was a really tight squeeze to drop it in though.

Ha ha. When I finished my swap, I was looking at and though, that hood is never going to close (we had taken it off). It fit fine but sure didn't look like it. Good luck with everything.

I was thinking the same thing when a friend of mine made that remark. I didn't reply to him knowing that somehow it would close properly.

It'll close (is it'll an acceptable combination of it and will?), just looks like it won't.

Just out of curiousity, what motor mounts are you using and aside from the alternator, were there any issues with swapping the wiring harness over? What are you going to do about exhaust? Are you going to use the GS-R cat or just run a straight pipe? I've been planning to do a B20 swap into my '98 EX forever but never have the funds. I still have the tranny, axles, shift linkage and whatnot from my '95 GS-R swap but I just need a long block. I wanted to go with a B20 but I'd need to convert to OBD I (most B20's you find are JDM) and this is my only car right now, so if I do the swap, I've pretty much gotta do in a weekend.

I am using the GSR mounts for the two in the front, 2 Si (or SiR for Canada) mounts for the rear tranny and driver side top mount and I'm using my Civic top tranny mount. Everything fits perfect, but I have to admit the rear tranny mount was near impossible to install. Took me at least 45 minutes to get the bolt through.

For the wiring harness, besides the alternator connector the others are fine. Well, I had to modify some of them, like the KS, IAB, VTEC solenoid, VTEC pressure, etc. The one thing I'm worried about is that the wiring harness isn't really supported by anything in the back of the engine (where it passes underneath the intake manifold). It's in place and can't really move, but it's not really held in at any point. Also, I connected the grounds for the VTEC pressure sensor and IAB to the chassis of the car. I hope that's ok. I couldn't locate the appropriate ground wire in the wiring harness.

Now I'm trying to modify my current throttle cable, because I don't want to spend more money on a GSR one. I've already spent so much. Monicle has a photo gallery explaining what to do, hope that works.

For my exhaust, for now I'll temporarily run it off of my Civic exhaust w/o cat...I know I know, it'll be really loud. But I'll make an appointment for Monday or Tuesday to get a custom 2 1/4" piping done.

That rear mount can be a bitch. I had a set of ES bushing inserts on my hatch and we couldn't get the rear mount to drop over them without pushing them out of the mount so I had to remove that T mount and install it after the motor was lowered down in. That was extremely tight and a big pain in the ass. I just soaked the sucker in grease when I did it the second time and it seemed to go easier.

The wiring should be alright, but you could always use a couple of zip ties to tie everything into place. I would assume grounding the VTEC and IAB to the chassis should be sufficent.

I just purchased a GS-R cable for my EG swap, I think it was less than $50. I could have probably made the CX cable work (it was extremely long) but I decided to spend the money. Aside from being a bitch to get it attached to the TB sometimes, it worked fine.

I forgot the non-VTEC cars could just attach the exhaust manifold directly. I used an extended GS-R cat on my '92 CX/B18C1 and it worked well. I tried a custom test pipe for about a week but it changed the exhaust tone from deep and nice to higher pitched and whinny. I put the cat back on, they're pretty efficent as far as flow. I had a Tanabe Racing Medalion exhaust I bought used for my hatch, loud but fun. Good luck getting it started, hopefully you don't have any major problems!
