Default 300hp under $4000?

I can't decide on which swap to do. I want to get close to, if not over 300hp. I know in order to do that its going to take a turbo. But what I cant decide on is the block. Iv researched all the possibilities and for every swap there are people who love them and people who hate them. Bassically I'm looking for a good way to reach 300hp, while keeping it under $4000. (going to need around $500 for custom downpipe and exhaust and upgraded fuel pump). I have a 97 civic dx. Iv looked into already built swaps which is what im leanging towards. so I'm wondering which is the best and safest route to go (dont want to boost and then have the engine fail). I'v researched b18's, ls/vtec, b16's, cr-vtec's etc. advice would be appriciated.

300hp under $4k is a long strech, I doubt you can pull it off. The best engine to build cheap would be a B18A/B, though.

To be honest, if you are on a budget, you may want to look into early 90's turbo DSM's (4G63 Turbo) or 87-91 RX-7 Turbo II's (13BT) because both can be made to 300+hp much easier then a Civic, on the stock engine even. Just a thought.

Yeh for $4000, you can just about buy a 1g DSM and get 300hp out of it. I think one guy got 268awhp out of the stock turbo and with about $750 in mods.

a cheaper turbo would be a T-28 from an SVO Mustang/Thunderbird. it will exceed 300hp easy. as for a motor swap, a B20z with a ITR head will make it easy for that turbo to make it to 300hp
