Dying Engine Issue
My girlfreind's 86 isuzu tropper II is having some problems. I know its not a honda, or acura, but i figured if i asked a general question somone would be able to help us out. It will start up, and run for a few seconds and then just die. I can rev up the engine and it runs smooth, but then just dies. The check engine light will come on, but i dont know how to check the codes, much less what the codes mean on this car.
The only symtoms i can give you is that before the oil light came on every time she went around a corner, but then we topped off the oil and that fixed that problem. I checked all the fuel lines , the oil is fine, oil pressure is fine, fuel pressure and the injectors seem to be fine since i can rev the engine up to 3k and it runs fine till it dies.
If anyone can give any ideas, please let me know
Thanks

its def a sensor and that engine light is the fast ticket to pinpointing the exact problem and fixing it promptly
OBD1 and earlier cars are sooo easy to diagnose using engine codes, a literate 4 year old could technically figure out a problem with a MIL light.
so i would go splurge the $15 for your g/f and get the chiltons or haynes manual at autozone / autobarn / pep(shit)boys
and follow the ecu MIL diag procedure

Just another idea... What does the tach do when it's running for those few seconds?
Here's what I'm thinking: Most cars run the fuel pump for a couple seconds when you start. Then if the ECU does NOT see a tach signal from the ignition, it shuts off the pump. If the tach is flaky, check all the wiring between the ignition & the ECU.

the fuel pump relay will charge the fuel line for usually about 2 seconds. the ecu will wait indefinitely for the ignition signal, once the fuel line is charged it is charged for a while, once the car is started the ecu restores power to the fuel pump relay to allow the engine to start and run.
the main idea here is that he should check the MIL light for the code. its foolish to start tinkering with things when there is a goddamn MIL light on.
the light is there for a reason
