Default problem inserting axle

I'm trying to put in the new right axle I got but it wont go in as if it is too big but it measures the same sice as the one I took out. there is a spiral groove on the inside of the hole but if the retaining ring is supposed to fit in it I cant seem to get it in no matter how I turn or pound it.

what part cant you get into the trans or the hub? If its the trans just keep rotating the axle as you try to ram it in the trans. If its the hub make sure the splines arnt damaged and put some lube on the splines and get it started in the hub and slam the hub and axle back and fourth together.
