Hello All,

I finally got it off. Here is what I found. Nope. Not broking shift fork. Something worst.

Any suggestions...Should I purchase a new tranny? If so, which one should I look for? If it is best to keep this one, how do I clean it. It has metal shavings all over the place. This was bad.

Wow. I would start looking for a used transmission. I'm not sure what kinds are compatible for your engine though. Even if you could get the parts they would probably cost more than buy a decent used one.

Great post - still helping 4 years later! So, I got into the tranny because I thought I needed a new throwout bearing, but discovered that the noise I was hearing was coming from the bearing on the input shaft (the one furthest from the engine). I didn't do a total rebuild - I just got a bearing kit which replaced all of the bearings and the washers. I cleaned everything pretty thoroughly because what had happened with the bad bearing was the plastic cage holding the ball bearings in place broke, and i was chasing its pieces all out of the oil channels and nooks and crannies and such. Any ideas? If you still follow these forums, your help would be most appreciated again!
My friend had did a complete transmission rebuild(D16z6-s20), we got it all put back on the car, all the gears work great but its a solid wall on reverse. So we pulled the trans out got the case off, left the shift bar on the trans so we can push it in and out of gears. Well, with the case off we determined it goes into reverse, but putting the case on, getting the clip on, it will not go into reverse. Numorous times, pulling the case and setting it back on and testing, it still will not go into reverse with the case on. Have performed measurements of the shaft(assuming the top of the shaft is binding) to the top of the case, which still leaves enough room for the top of the shaft to slide into the case.
We tried leaving the transmission in reverse with the shaft at the top, but the case will not seat easilly, and is difficult to pull back into nuetral. So our leading cause is, the shaft needs shimmed to a certain angle to beable to slide properly into the case? Any Ideas?

Took my transmission to the shop, they had taken all gears off the shaft and reassembled the trans. The guy at the shop said 5th gear was stuck as he was trying to take it off, because it was not aligned correctly. He says there are alignment marks for 5th gear, if its misaligned it puts pressure on the 5th/reverse shaft so it allows 5th to go in but not reverse. I put it back in the car and wellah! Nice to have reverse again.

Hello Fathergoat,

I found a donor tranny. Had to swap top casing because bolts was broken on the donor. Now that I have everything back together and tried to move through the gears. Now it feels like it is not going into second properly. Go through all the gears but have to wiggle the shifter for it to go into second. Any ideas?

did you check the spacing and shim the bearings on the input shaft? https://www.honda-acura.net/forums/d...ml#post3763558
it sounds like there may be too much play. it could also be a rounded syncro but that's really not that common and you probably would have spotted it. also does it do this while driving? or have you tried driving yet?
when my bearings went out my car would pop out of second when I was making a turn it was odd but it was the bearings.

No I have not driven it yet. It is still out of the car. I don't want to put it in and then have to take it back out. Trying to make sure everything is correct before I put it back in. I did not check the clearances. I should have done that. Got ahead of myself. I will do that this weekend. Hope the ones on the old tranny are good. That way I don't have to purchase any.

yeah there's a good chance the clearances are off and you may need some shims but it should work. it's easy to get in a rush but being meticulous is often faster in the end.
slow and steady wins the race

I will check the clearances. If the clearances are off, where can I purchase the shims. Also, the shaft turned but did not move that freely when I moved through the gears. I am talking about when put everything back together and tested its function. I read on another forum that the shaft should move even though it is in gear.

you should be able to rotate the shaft by hand. if it's in gear you can still rotate by hand and you should see the diff move.
I got my shims from http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com
