Default no vtec with b16a

i have an 88 crx si with a 1st gen b16a and a pr3 computer. i wired up everything i needed to and my vtec did not work. i double checked all the wiring and pin locations, and it was all correct. i then wired up an apexi vafc to try to correct the problem. the vtec still doesn't engage, although the vtec solenoid i'm pretty sure is in working condition (i used a jumper wire to give it power and it clicked on and off). does anyone know what it could be or what i can try? also, if my computer is bad, wouldn't the vafc still run the vtec? thanks.

are you low on oil? when my brother's civic got to be about a quart low on oil, his vtec wouldn't engage. also, is the ECU throwing a code?

How are you testing it? I believe VTEC is done by speed, oil pressure, rpm, and perhaps some other things. So all that stuff has to be ok for it to work.

check oil pressure and vtec solenoid..........and check the ecu. ecu controls vtec. vafc just adjusts it.

i've been taking the car around the block and winding out 1st or 2nd gear to test it. the ecu isn't throwing any codes. is there a way to test the solenoid, oil pressure, and ecu to see if something needs replaced? also is 4 quarts of oil enough to make the oil pressure high enough?

not sure if this applies to all hondas, but my CRX takes 4 1/4 quarts... the 1/4 probably wouldn't make it too low but it wouldn't hurt to try adding a little more
