Default old paint but still shines, how do you keep that shine

my car is an 85 and the paint is in really good condition. now, i'd really like to keep it that way but i'm afraid that if I wax the car it would just eat the paint. i gassed up the car the other day and spilled just a bit on the outside of the tank. i wiped it with a paper towel and noticed that a little blue came off.

besides the obvious and getting the car painted what else you guys think I should do?

They might be able to help more in the appearance forum. I would probably suggest going to a detail shop and getting their opinion since they will be able to examine it better.

prolly just some oxidation, get a nice polish and some wax and wash, polish it, rinse it off, and wax it. it'll come out really nice

Yeah polish will work pretty good... But I doubt that most of that color coming off is oxidation, some of it is, but its also the paint. No biggie.. Just polish then wax. You should be fine for a while. My crx has no clear coat left and its holding up fine. (but I wax it every two weeks) . Just don't get it buffed...

clay, ah it all makes sense now. my brother used to spend countless hours detailing his car. it was like a 4 or 5 step process. he lost me after step 1.

Hey, I'd like to extend this question by asking for some advice. I have the white filmy looking oxidation on the roof of my gray civic. Is there any way I can get rid of this without a new paint job? It would look much much better without it.
