Default NOX level too high...90' std hatch!!

I can't get my hatch to pass Texas Emissions. The inspector said my NOX level was way high.
90'hatch std-Sohc-1.5L-74hp-190,000miles-Bone stock.
Can anybody give me a list of parts that may be causing this? Parts that may need replacing? I know the whole damn engine should be replaced...not ready for a transplant just yet.
Thanks guys.

Plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires, 02 Sensor...all suspect.

Been there done that...No results. A few people told me the cat-converter may be the problem.
Thanks guys.
Anymore ideas?

I had the same high NOx problem with my 91 CRX Si. I fixed it by doing a complete tune-up (new plugs [remember to gap them], new air filter, set the valve clearances, set the timing, change the oil and oil filter, change the fuel filter [if it's over 5yrs old]). That brought the NOx enough to pass. Before the next smog test, I'll probably replace the cat. [it brings down HC, CO, and NOx.]

If your car has EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), cleanup or replace the EGR valve. (that should bring down the NOx; NOx is caused by high temps in the cylinders; the EGR lowers the temps.)

How many miles does your car have on it?
Does it still have the original cat? (at about 150k the cat starts getting weak)

You can by a cat for $107 including shipping. (it could be more, if the cat is bolted directly to the header.)

One other thing, excessive carbon build-up on top of the pistions and inside the cylinder head can cause the NOx to go high also. Why? it raises the compression and the combustion temp goes up causing high NOx.

I'm thinking of doing this before I try again:
-Seafoam the gas tank, intake manifold, crank case...to get rid of carbon buildup and harmful deposits.
-Change the oil,plugs,wires,all filters,o2 sensor,cat-converter.
-new oem exhaust from cat back.
-cooling fan check,thermostat check
-adjust timing if needed
-compression test
Anything else??
Thanks guys.

I didn't even know we did emission testing in Texas.......we don't here in San Antonio.

Easiest thing is to drive out of your nice neighboorhood into a poorer one and pay somebody $30 for it instead of $12.50 or $15 or whatever it is. That's what I do about my leaky exahust, missing wiper blade, missing wheel stud, non-functioning backup lights.....etc. etc.

Yeah...but I really do want the car to be in good running condition.
I wish I could get my sticker where you go...It's between $50-60 bucks here.
Here in Houston we have taken top honors in fucked up air due to smog for the past 2 years...That's the worst in the U.S.!...The air here is nothing put a piece of poodle shit on the bottom of my heel.........the air sucks.
