Default 91 CRX HF clutch issues/inquiries.

first off, is my clutch going to be hydraulic or cable? it was replaced about 8 months ago so God please make it be a simple problem... if its hydraulic I wonder if my fluid is low, if its a cable I'll assume the cable came all un****ed.

what happened was I pressed it in and felt something like a snap and it was audible and from there on out I could push the clutch in about 1/3 of the way with absolutely no resistence pushing back at me. When its in 1st gear at a stop sign it idles all awkward because first is trying to be engaged. Its sporadic though, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt... speed shifting is not my forte so I just want to have it fixed

thx for any help, Im a noob at cars.

Yes, it's cable unless it's been converted. It's more than likely one of the cable mounts broke, probably the one at the firewall. And/or the cable is fixing to break.

Changing the cable is not to complicated;however, i've known and still know some people that can't screw in a lightbulb. If it's the mount at the firewall that broke(which happened to my 86 crx), you'll have to get somebody to weld it back or fabricate your own cable mount. I stuck a big washer between the firewall and cable, which fixed mine after the mount broke.

my guess is that when the clutch was replaced, the cable where it attaches to the pedal inside the car wasn't properly seated and finally popped into place - have seen it happen many, many times - just adjust the clutch cable and you will be fine

The clutch bracket shouldn't matter. The clutch cable on my crx isn't held by anything, it's just attached right into the tranny. If it's not the cable itself that is damaged, then u could either have these problems:
1. The cable just needs to be adjusted. Go to the tranny, look for the clutch cable(it's black and has a large plastic nut right on the arm that the cable is attached to), and tighten the nut. Double check the adjustment after your done.
2. The clutch pedal itself is broken. This was the case for me a coule months back. I replaced EVERYTHING, b4 realizing that the pedal itself was the culprit. Look under your dash and check to see that your pedal is operating okay. Look at the little cylindrical post that is right where the pedal "pivots". If it's broken, then the pedal won't get leverage to pull the clutch out, so replace it. It's only like 30 bucks or so at a junk yard. Any 89-91 civic or crx pedal assembly will work. I think 90-91s had better pedal assemblies, so try them first.
3. Worst case scenario, the clutch release arm is broken from inside the transmission. It's not hard to actually remove the arm from the transmission, but this means you have to drop the transmission out to get to it. PITA. Try other things first, and if they all check out, then you'll have to inspect your release arm, or even the clutch itself.
Hope this helps, good luck!
