Default a/c compressor help

i have a 1999 civic EX 2-door.
i have a problem that just started today. whenever i turn on the a/c , the compressor starts smoking . it looks like its comming from its pulley , when i turn off the a/c the smoke stops . what is wrong with my compressoor? is it broken ? do these things require oil??? advice is apreciated

The clutch is possibly going bad if it smokes or the gap needs adjusting. The only oil required for the a/c is internal. It circulates with the freon. Try skeeting some brake parts cleaner onto the clutch and see if that helps.
