Default just picked up a new hatch...

... I just got a hoopty project hatch for $750. Thing is, the car comes with this ugly, short, uncomfortable little shift knob. I bought a replacement, but the old one just will NOT come off. Does anybody know of any other mechanism besides the little allen screw that holds a shift knob on? I've tried directly unscrewing the thing, but it just won't budge.
Any ideas?

thanks.
