I think it's because you don't beat on it enough. :dunno:
I just beat on mine until something breaks and then I fix it. My car is where every cent of my disposable income goes, which is essentially everything I make. Your motor is designed to run right up to its redline and then some everyday and have no problems. When I had my D for about 4 months I beat on it everyday. Every time it was 6500+rpms and a fast shift when I had the room. I've kept it above 4500 rpms with constant WOT and hard braking for minutes at a time. This was on a motor with 157000 miles that sat for a year and a half. All I did was change the plugs and the oil a couple times as well as a few other normal upkeep bits. 5000 miles later when I did the swap it was still running like a champ albeit a bad MAP sensor was making it run kind of shitty. And I still got decent mileage beating on it to top it all off. We tore it apart a couple weeks ago and everything in it looked normal for a motor of its age. Sure they get a little carboned up but that was probably the thing running rich with the CEL on. And there was a little bit of junk on the sides of the pistons, but everything else looked perfect. It burned maybe a half quart or less between oil changes. Nothing had immenent failure written all over it. And with my new motor? I'm not going to baby it, this thing was really designed to push right up to it's fuel cutoff everyday and I do take it up to 8200 everyday. The only thing that I think is a bit of an issue with Hondas is the transmissions. You can't be too hard on the syncros. The motor I bought has a bad 3rd gear syncro and the shift forks are worn out and the clutch is starting to go bad. The tranny on my old motor was starting to give out a little bit too. It only has 32000 miles so I bet the guy in Japan beat the shit out of it. I still bet I will get 150k out of it. The other thing is who cares if it blows up? A new B16a longblock is only $650. An SOHC ZC which would be a nice upgrade for you is something like $400. I can get the transmission rebuilt better than new for something like $1200 by a really good shop with the carbon syncros so it will last forever and I can shift as fast as I like. I see it this way. You can get a newer car that will be worry free for like $10,000 or if you have an older car like an EF civic you really like you will probably dump that much into over time to get it to be even more fun than that newer car. I like to work on stuff so I chose to get an older car that would need work and money to upkeep. But when I get done with it it's going to be way more fun that a newer civic. Right now it will probably keep up a brand new '04 Si and I like it a lot more. I have probably $5000 into it right now with the swap and I have plans for bodywork and paint and some other upgrades and fixes for another $5000. But after that I will be pretty happy with it even though it wil probably be worth nothing but I will be able to keep driving it for years.

Well, my engine hasn't been able to hold up to my granny treatment, so I don't think that beating on it would help it to last any longer...I think the posters on this board, saying how much they've abused their engines and how many miles they get, is proof enough that my engine is defective or something. I guess every manufacturer has a defective one here and there. I do think its better to stick with my civic, though. I mean once I get another engine, and about 10 other things it needs done, at least I'll know what I have with my car. If I buy another car (used) I have no idea about the problems it may have and may end up right where I'm at now or worse. I just don't want to take the chance on another car.
