Default Ignition problem? Died on the freeway

On my way to work, the ignition system stopped firing. I could hear the engine winding down and kicking back on..

two questions :

first, i left the car in gear (4th 60mph)

how terrible is it to keep the motor running @ 4000rpm WITHOUT fire (spark plugs were not firing.) is the oil and water pump mechanical? shouldn't they work as long as the motor is turning.

and any ideas on why this happened? I suspect the distributer , but i a bit of smoke comming off the back of the motor.

oil and water are good, nothing under the car.
Turns over but will not start.

Anyone in FL know where I can find Strong SI motors or even a ZC motor?

Thanks,
Tom

Are you sure you didn't drop a timing belt?

God I hope not. My timming belt cover is actually REALLY damaged.

Previous owner had the Timming belt changed but they didn't put the cover back on right. Its cracked in many ways and my alternator belt has actually eaten through it.

Its been a good 110k since that belt was changed,

shouldn't I have eaten the motor if that belt went? I should hear all kinda of rucus?

It kept getting spark on and off as i was pulling over, finally it gave "check engine" and stalled as I came to a stop.

Honestly, it sounds as if the rotor came loose from the distributor shaft or that you dropped a timing belt. Check both, b/c with your discription either could have happened. You don't necessarily have to hear a bunch of racket from a broken timing belt.

Tomorrow should be an interesting day. With 197k on the clock, anything goes.

I just hope that timming belt is okay, I was not prepaired to replace the motor this soon, I have no idea where to find another one.

I hear different things from different people, but finding a good ZC engine is hard right? I don't think anyone in Central Florida will have an SI motor just sitting around.

Damn, I was headed for Florida state Fairgrounds on the 11th too. Even got a spare set of used rims and tires for it

That's a pretty ignorant thing to say, sounds like you don't like the car mommy and daddy got you.

I'm sure when your Crx dies on the way to work, you'll be jumping with joy parked on the side of the interstate during rush hour.

Then you can get that 96 hatch that "RUNS!" in all its DX glory.

Hey now, opinions and hopes are personal items. There is a no flaming policy in any forum I moderate. I'm glad we're getting new people, but there will be none of that, so now that you know, cut it out now.

His just doesn't seem like the most appropiate post in a thread about broken timming belts.

Seriously, must be nice having a new car waiting for you everytime you break the old one. I wonder what that's like.
