Default TL reliability issues?

A guy who owns a garage that specializes in Japanese cars was telling me that the TL`s have had a lot of problems in the past. He said they are only good for 70,000-80,000 miles before they start having a lot of problems with the ABS system, Auto trannys, the ignition system and all kinds of other electronic problems. Would you agree with this? This is the first bad thing I have heard about Acura TL`s, I know Honda has always had Automatic transmission problems, but the other stuff is new news to me.

There were/are a very small percentage of the second generation TL's that have transmission problems. I believe something in the range of 3%. Because of this Acura has issued a longer warranty for the transmission (the 5AT) for a seven year period. I don't know of any other significant reliability problem. Don't forget the % of cars with the tranny problem is very very small.

For now, but they'll all eventually go. Our local Acura dealership does about 1 tranny per week on TL's, about 1 per month on MDX's.

All trannies will eventually go...my Accord has 140k but she's still running great. If I can get 175k without spending a dime on the tranny, I'll be happy.

People expect Hondas to last forever, I don't get it. Most cars would have required half the things replaced at my mileage. I've only had to replace the shocks, timing belt, water pump, EGR and 02 sensor.

Sounds like another Honda hater, You always have a guy that "works on japanese" cars that crys Hondas have problems. With exception of the TL trannys(and they are going away I noticed too) the cars are great. I never do anything major to them.

The only real problems are alternators and transmissions. The engines are built great.

I have a 97TL with 188,000 miles. I am a tard when it comes to cars but have some good friends that are knowledgable. I have had no problems with the transmission and have had 1 major repair since I bought it new(exhaust manifold or something like that).

When mine dies, I'm going to get another - I just hope it lasts a little longer - car performs great!

i agree... acura/honda makes great cars, much more reliable than other domestic companies. they make great engines, but not all cars can be completely perfect. i got problems with my tranny on my 3.2cl type S and im worried that it might continue even with my replaced tranny. hopefuilly it won't, but atleast acura is good enough to extend the warranty to 100k. they atleast take responsibility for their errors, even though the tranny problem only happens to about 1% of all cl's sold.

it's more than one percent believe me, I was replacing up to twenty trannys a week last summer in TL/CL models.
