I'm a home/car stereo repair technician for a big chain, and I will tell you we bounce any and all claims w/o serial # or with missmatching s/n. It's not worth your time. Believe me, I have seen a good share of people try to pull wool over the eyes. Some have gotten away, most have not! Besides, you'd need a receipt showing you bought it, anyway.

they actually _let_ you write your own name down.

Most of the big chains now track serial number when you purchase..... watch when the cashier scans the bar codes -- the first one will be for the price, the second for the serial number. Some companies even ask for your home phone when you make the purchase. No matter how smart you think you are, a $10 billion company is always on the lookout for stuff. It's kind of like the old radar detector/radar gun debate. When a company comes out with a better gun, Valentine One comes out with a better detector. When the dectectors get too good for the cops, they get a better gun.
