your project sound fun. you've inspired me to consider putting one in my car. so all you need is auxillary inputs in the head unit to input the sound from the computer? are there any problems with having a computer in your car, such as damage from vibration and such? this thread has really gottem me interested in this subject. thanks
damn someone beat me to the punch. I have a VIA C3 2688 800mhz mini ITX mobo, a castronic 2688 case(which includes a dc-dc power supply for native 12v feed instead of using an inverter to take the DC to AC, then the power supply just takes it back to DC, 11 1/2w" x 2 1/2h" x 10 3/4l"), 2 256meg PC133 sdram sticks, maxtor 120gig diamondmax plus 8(the 8 series is only 16mm high as opposed to 24-26mm of previous 3.5" drives, and are cooler and quieter than older versions), slim dvd rom(from an old notebook), mpegbox shutdown controller(makes it so when I kill the ignition is "pushes" the power button putting the computer into hibernate, you can set the time from seconds to minutes after the ignition goes off to press the button as well), crystalfontz 634 20 x 4 LCD with blue lighting(it's backordered, expecting it any day), a usb 802.11b NIC and delorme USB gps setup.
Only two things left before I install it. Not sure if I want a full sized wireless KB and mouse, or go with the Lucent IR wireless keyboard(about the size of a palm pilot with real strange key layout) or an interlink RF keyboard and mouse($$$, freakin $180 but it's small and it's RF). And the other thing is the screen I've hooked the computer up a few times in my car and since they're not true vga screens it looks a little foul. I might hold out for a touchscreen, 7" vga screen which will fix a bunch of problems but it's $400. I've also been thinking about a data acq board with analog I/Os so I can control some stuff in the car, and monitor other stuff, since I have one PCI slot in the box(it has a riser car in the case so the PCI slot is parallel to the mobo) With a data acq board I can watch when the engine functions and write a little visual basic app to display different parameters, also since there's outputs I can centrally control the windows and other things, like part of it's hibernate sequence could be to roll all the windows up, close the sunroof then lock the doors( I already have that with my alarm, but it would be cute to have the computer do it). I also plan on using one of the extra aux funtions from the alarm to remotely turn it on, so I can sync it in the morning while I'm shaving if I downloaded some new mp3s the night before
Can't wait to see your finished project, I'll be posting pics of mine when I get all the parts and get this thing kicking.

I'm just going leave it like this for now, and get the DC-DC ATX power supply later, which will handle standby and shutting down properly.
