Default Keyless Remote Stopped - Break?

Hi,
I have a 02 honda accord Ex.
I know there is a ton of info about the remotes and programming... But I could not find something along the lines of my question..

My remote worked fine...started to get intermittent. I would have to hold the button a couple of seconds for the doors to lock/unlock. Also seemed like you had to be closer to the car for it to work...Then the remote stopped working... I figured the battery died. The wife took it to dealership and guy put battery in remote and tried it....still dead... He said remote is broke... Seems unlikely it would just die like that...

Can the remote or the car loose it's memory and/or code? Anyone seen this before? Any troubleshooting Suggestions?
