basically, a ported box will make it sound like you have more subs than you do, and can be heard at greater distances outside the vehicle, and also allows more of the bass distortion to be heard. a sealed box keeps sound closer to the car, and has a tighter bass sound than ported
whats the type of sub? how much wattage are you running to it? Personally i like ported over sealed, but thats come from having my sub in both types of boxes. The best way to figure out what you'll like is to do the same.
my 15" alpine type-r its a dual 2 ohm sub and it runs 750 watts rms. im planning on running a Hifonics BXi 606 amp (600 watts at 1 ohm) at 500-550 watts.
this was the best amp i could find that pumps out the most watts at 1 ohm (budget-wise though) for less than $200 since 1 ohm amps are rare. unless anyone else can suggest other good amps at 1 ohm ?? (around $200)
i believe "wrong" notes are caused by clipping. Overgaining the amp, and tons of other things can cause it too. Techincally the sub only plays what is given to it. The reason why you can hear it more in a ported box is because ported boxes are normally are louder than a sealed.
a sub can produce "wrong" notes and it is better heard in a ported box
How would a sub in a properly built ported box produce a "wrong" note? If a sub is producing a wrong note, there is a serious flaw in the system and that should probably be fixed.
