As far as the HU is concerned, Alpine is hands-down the best choice. Let me just emphasize that Alpine heads are the only HU anyone should buy. Other than that, I'd recommend JL audio for the other components, which sound stellar with my Alpine HU:
Alpine HU
- CD changer input convert to twin RCA, 1/8 male stereo jack dropped
out the (former) ashtray; sized perfectly for the (now defunct) ipod
mini.
JL Audio - e series, 350w. RMS
- 6 1/2" Alpine Type S components (front - total crap)
- 5 1/4" JL Audio (rear)
- 12" JL Audio sub 250w RMS
The $200 Alpine HU can't be beaten for it's price, and will hold it's own in terms of SQ when compared to other, more expensive brands.

i personally have the alpine 9856, it's basic yet has a good amount of options, yet it is one of the best brands for headunits... i did a good amount research on headunits and was stuck between the pioneer and the alpine... JVC and Kenwood quality really blows now adays compared to what it was like back in the 90's

On the low end cd1000 Im afraid yes. It was confirmed through a dealer by the eclipse rep. Maybe thats why it looks nothing like the other decks and has a detachable face?

Well not necessarily bought out but eclipse is atleast rebadging that one unit. Doesn't surprise me considering they moved to Circuit City and crutchfield so they probably need a lot more units then they used to. It was probably the cheapest and fastest way to get a bottom of the line deck out. They used to be pretty much exclusive to brick and mortar stores with the exception of good guys. Anyways this comes from a guy who runs an eclipse also. If they spent a bit more time in r&d and fixed a few issues i think they would have great decks. As they are right now id be hard pressed to take an eclipse over an alpine which i dont feel are great either but are better. Just imo.
