some people install there own alarms and that is how they have remote starts on a 5spd (its actually illegal in some states, and 90% of business wont touch it)

benefits of doing it yourself:
-uniqueness of the brains position, you can mount it in an "uncommon" spot.
-only YOU know where it is. there is 0% chance of anyone else finding out.
-if you need to fix something or add-on, you know where to find the brain.
-you know its not a hack-job or half-assed (or maybe it is.. lol)
-no worry about the installer selling out the info on your cars alarm or installing a hidden switch. just because the installer works for a reputable company, such as best buy or car toys, doesnt mean they wont do this. i know at my store we were having HUGE HUGE HUGE (tens of thousands of dollars) employee theft problems.
-cheaper. a killer alarm system costs $150-250 tops. businesses charge about $350-500 just for the install.

now if its completely out of the question to do it yourself, your going to have to suffer with no remote start. however, if you know basic electronics and can install amps/decks/speakers with ease, then an alarms not much harder.. it looks a lot harder than it is. the hardest challenge is sorting through the mess of wires and not knowing where to begin.

also, be sure to invest in backup security. backup battery, high pitch inside siren, multiple sensors (tilt, shock, proximety, door, window, dome light), ignition kill switch, 12-guage shotgun, ect. car alarms are not hard to bypass for an intelligent theif -- if they want it bad enough they can just drill through your fender and drain the battery, then disconnect the alarm and put a new battery in for example. ultimately your just slowing down the process, and the more stuff a theif has to bypass -- the less likely they are to take your car. another good investments are the clubs, the steering wheel can be cut but once again its just another thing that has to be bypassed. a fuel kill switch is one of the better things you can do to prevent the whole car from being stolen. since pretty much every import car can be started with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers, a fuel kill switch is a great anti theft tactic -- its super cheap and if the theif even figures out that the car wont start because theres a hidden switch, s/he is going to have to search the car for a switch.
