Default 90 civic Si antenna

Question.......

The stock antenna was chipped and I have no way of replacing it with a new one. Someone suggested that I should keep the radio wire plugged into my deck, wire the other side to a mounted antenna and put it on the dashboard. Those antennas I've seen in other cars either on the trunk or left on the dashboard. Would that work? and if it does would it be more powerfull than the stock antenna? Would it also eliminate the fact that radio stations tend to ride over others at certain areas of the city?

I welcome any other suggestions than the above, cuz I really don't like the fact that there is a coat hanger sticking outta my roof.

Thanks for the help
