radar detector
i have passport 8500 and i have Q about it
i experienced couple cops just passing me by but the detector didnt alarm me any...
but it catches like weird bank security system and stuff....
is there something wrong with mine? or is it just like that
is it suppose to catch those cops too? or just standing watching cops?

A radar detector detects RADAR. If no radar is pointed in your direction,... it wont go off.
Some really good radar detectors will go off even if the radar isn't pointed your way,..ie: The Valentine, Bel, etc.

Its only gonna detect when the radar gun is on. Even if the radar gun isnt pointed at you you will still get comfirmation because of the scattering signal off of streetsigns/other cars. You will notice that cops will even keep the radar gun off until they see someone speeding. Thats why you still gotta keep your eyes open, dont just beleive the radar detector will work 100% of the time. Once the cop sees someone speeding then they can turn on the gun and BAM they got you.

Anything used to detect motion will have some sort of frequency emission..... in other words, your detector sensing the bank or any grocery store with automatic doors is normal. They use what is essentially low frequency radar, so yes your detector will see that. Now, if you drive by a cop and you don't get a reading, that's one of two possibilities: he either doesn't have his radar gun on, or he has LASER..... and if he has LASER, you're toast.

Well, duh! Of course every detector made in the last 10 years detects laser, but when you get the signal, you've already got a ticket.

Yeah, I've got a pretty decent Cobra unit that's saved me a couple of times, but there's times when the cop's gun isn't on and he can shoot right at you and nail you, like today for example. . . 55 in a 45.
Edit: Escort makes a unit called a shifter, I forget the model number but it's something like Z3 or X3 or some overused letter:number combo. I read an independent review of it on radartest.com and it successfully jammed 99% of the laser. Five different guns. Another review stated 95%. Laser is one of those things where once you know you've been hit, just go ahead and pull over, so at $250 (I think that was the price) which is about the cost of a 20 over ticket on the interstate (where laser is more common) is probably a decent investment, and it sure would impress friends.

Yes, I looked into that. The ZR3 laser shifter. It's quite a sophistocated system (and expensive: $499.99 plus installation - which ain't gonna be cheap either because the defusers have to be custom installed into your front and rear bumpers). There's 2 front and 1 rear defusers, a control module, and the system display (which can be integrated into my 8500 I found out as well ). The package seems to be the real deal from all the reviews I read, but I just hate the thought of people cutting and chopping into my bumper (the fronts can be mounted in the grille). And to add to it, you're at about 3 tickets after you've had it installed, and unless your last name is Schumacher, Earnhardt, or Gordon, you're just not going to get enough tickets from laser to justify the cost and hassle of installation.
