Just my .02

as far as i know goodyear gatorback belts are accessory belts and not timing and balancer shaft belts.

besides do you really think something that says goodyear on it will be that much cheaper than oem??

oem timing & balancer belts are the way to go on a honda.

I know that gatorbacks are for accessory drive.. I was using that as an example for Goodyears abilities.

Also, the goodyear belt can be picked up at almost any automotive parts store for around $30 whereas the OEM belt must be ordered either from a dealer or an online store for more like $50. Saving $20 on something that has not been proven any less of a belt than OEM sounds like a pretty damn good deal to me. Especially if I can go down the street and pick one up rather than order, pay shipping and wait......

Accordsleeper: Nice try but unless you can show me something that shows the goodyear as less of a product, I will not be convinced to spend the almost double on OEM parts.

Default UPDATE

Okay, I checked out the fan. And guess what... it only comes on for two things:

1. The AC compressor kicks on (this activates both fans)
2. I shut the car off

It does not turn on under normal operation of the car. So, I did the paper clip in the connector trick. Fan operated in same fashion (won't kick on under normal operation, only when car is off, or compressor kicks on). So, does that make it the fan relay? I should have my Helms tomorrow, but thanks for the tips in the meantime.

Anyone else have any input on this belt debate??

Helm book should help you... Sounds like a relay, or open wiring somewhere. I don't have a '95 so if I look it up in my book it might be different anyway.

1. Are there any higher performance or more reliable parts I should be installing while I'm in there? (Maybe a more efficient water pump or something)?

YEAH YOU CAN GET AFTERMARKET PULLY KITS, DONT KNOW FROM EXPERIANCE BUT THEY SAY THEY GIVE YOU HP, KINDA EXPENSIVE THOUGH

2. Is there any other work I should do when I have it all ripped apart?

3. Any tricks to the trade? This is my first real engine work (I'll have my buddy there who's pretty smart with cars). I will be in a hobby shop with air tools and a lift :naughty:

GOOD LUCK MY TIMING BELT WAS CHANGED AT THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE I BOUGHT THE CAR, BUT A FRIEND AND I ARE CHANGING HIS TIMING BELT ON HIS 91 EAGLE TALON. IT IS REALLY HARD WE ARE THINKING OF JUST PULLIN THE ENGINE...SOOOO GOOD LUCK

4. If anyone has ANY input, suggestions, warnings or any other comments, please post. I am a little nervous because I've heard some horror stories about this work.

UMMM JUST BE CARFUL WITH THE BELTS, DONT BEND THEM, GET OIL ON THEM ETC...ANYTHING THAT WILL HURT IT.

I just bought this car and I'm receiving the Helms Manual in the mail this week. The engine temp goes up QUICKLY at idle, but is fine under a load. That's why I'm thinking water pump. Plus I was planning on changing it anyway because of the mileage. Thanks for the input.

WHY ARE YOU THINKING THE WATER PUMP IS BAD, SOUND FINE TO ME. (NO EXPERT THOUGH)

It's called a Balancer Shaft Seal...

Replace it and get the cover piece.

well i guess goodyear does make timing & balancer belts for honda. looks like with shipping your going to pay ~$50 total for a f22b1.

i think honda is about $60 for both.
a honda dealer has these in stock btw, since hondas do tend to last over 90k+ miles this is a common item.

the key is unlike american cars honda oem products are good. goodyear does make a good product, but for something like a timing belt i would pay an extra $10-20 for something that i know is of high quality cause if it's not it can end up costing me more in the end.

As I delve (sp) into this more and more I have decided to change the crank and balance shaft seals. Isn't it some type of retaining clip or something for the balance shaft seal? I would think Honda would include that when they sell the seal, but I will make sure I get it. I have a feeling this is going to be a major project! Oh well, the only way to learn is to get your hands dirty. I have to put this off for a little while, but that might be a good thing to make sure I have all the information gathered before I tear her up. Thanks for all the comments. When I do this, I will take plenty of pics.

Do you think the Engine forum might like to see this thread? Those guys probably have some good thoughts on this.

Mods: if you think that's appropriate, can you copy the thread over. If it's fine where it is, cool.
