Default How do I pull my transmission?

It looks like I have a car much older than most of you, and it usually runs fine but is starting to show it's wear. I've driven a 1987 Honda Accord LXi for three years now, and about two months ago I changed my starter because it was giving me problems. The replacement starter was apparently the wrong part for the job and now two of my teeth on the flywheel are missing. To change it (the flywheel), I have to pull the transmission. My question is how..? I know it's going to have to come out the bottom due to it's design, and there is no way to get to that flywheel without pulling it out. It is an automatic, and the flywheel and starter are located on the passenger side of the vehicle. The car has nearly 170,000 miles on it, actually low considering it's age, but it isn't worth the $500 to bring it to a shop so if I can't do this myself I'm thinking I'll have to get rid of it.

Has anyone done this before? Could you offer some advice/instruction?

I did my own clutch install on my 94 Accord. Just get a Helms manual or if you don't want to spend as much, get a Haynes manual and follow the directions. Not sure what else to tell ya. Here's a link to a thread I posted awhile back when I was doing my install... link

pulling a trans is fun, start by draining the fluid, pulling the axles, then the shift likages, the starter, reverse switch, tranny-to-engine bolts, tranny mounts and then work the tranny out from underneath the car. You might as well get a new clutch to so you dont have to do this again. To in stall you will need to put the input shaft into the clutch disk, and do the steps above in reverse.

have fun if you dont have the tools this can be a very crappy job, and it can take a whole day too.

no no no... drain everything, then unhook all cables and wires connecting the engine/tranny to the rest of the car. Leave the shift linkage attached to the tranny but diconnect it from the shifter. unbolt the top of the shocks/springs and the upper control arms. Now only 8 bolts are holding the front clip in. drop those out and you can lift the body away from teh subframe and then can have free access to the tranny.

Thanks for all of the advice.. I bought a Chilton book covering my car that explains how to drop the transmission out of the bottom, that seems simpler than disconnecting the whole engine, although I'm supposed to use a hoist to support the engine, disconnecting it is optional I think. I won't replace the clutch because it doesn't have one. Probably will be an all day job anyway, I have my older brothers and father to help me though. 95, I like your 88 EX, btw.
