1991 Accord EX problems, jumping tach
Hey guys, I've been having trouble with my Accord lately and I'm desperate for a fix.
About a month ago, my tach started jumping erratically once I hit about 4k RPMs. No check engine light on, but it felt like I lost a bit of power when it happened.
First thing that crossed my mind was a tuneup, possibly there's a lose wire to the distributor. So I go ahead and replace the spark plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, but that doesn't help.
So I checked my service manual, and didn't see anything. At this point I decided it would be worth it to head to a mechanic, and I took the car to a Honda/Acura specialist. They replaced the ignition coil and sent me on my way - the car ran great, no problems whatsoever.
But now, a few weeks later, I'm seeing the same symptoms (but a bit less noticable). I was wondering if the distributor itself could be shot, but the thing is under 2 years old. Could there be something that's causing the ignition coil to just burn out? Replacing the ignition coil definitely seemed to do something, but I'm wondering if that was a symptom of another problem...
TIA!

Yeah, well, hate to tell ya, but you wasted your money on the ignition coil. My car did the same thing and took me a year to fork over the money for a distributor. Just go to your local auto store, and get one, install it(pretty straightforward, just put it in the same way, and make a mark so it is @ the exact same position) and take the old one back. The new one will come with a new ignition coil, so just use that one. After that you should get the timing checked just to be sure.
But distributors are the weak point of hondas, and you get a lifetime warranty with one if you get it at an auto store. Good luck

Thanks for the reply Aero, I was afraid of that... I'm just really surprised the guys at the shop missed it. I guess it's probably cheaper (both in money and time) for me to just replace the distributor myself, instead of going back to the shop.
