Default Shaking Steering Wheel (Not Brake Pedal)

I just put on new wheels and tires. 205/55/16's up from the stock 98 LX 15" and I am noticing a significant steering wheel vibration when I brake from 65 - 45 Mph. The brake pedal is not really modulating as much as the steering wheel is. The odd thing is that this only occurs during that speed range. Slowing from 75-65 and 45-0 there is no shake at all.

I had new front rotors installed in Jan of 2002 when I bought the car and they currently only have about 15,000 miles on them. So I'm kind of ruling out any warping.

I'm thinking that one of the front wheels may be out of balance. However the car drives more or less straight and true at all times untill braking in that speed range...

I'm going to have a shop look at it this weekend. Are there any other areas I should trouble shoot?

TIA

It's gotta be out of round or out of balance tires. Could be defective considering that they're new. Have whatever shop that mounted the tires check the balance.

Unfortunatly I bought them mounted and balanced from tirerack.com so I'll have to take it to another store to have it looked at.

Default I hope it is ONLY out of balance for me too.

I'll be watching this thread. I have the same thing happening on a just purchased 01 EX 4cMT...only around 65 mph and heavy breaking I get tire chatter (didn't notice during the 2 test drives) I was all psyched for the 4 wheel discs and ABS and now this....They threw way cheap tires on the front. maybe they are out of balance. I just ordered yok AVS, which I had on my just totaled LX coupe and they were sweet.

you guys got me thinking that I need to upgrade the brakes to something like Brembos! What is good quality performance shop in SF Bay Area? I am considering upgrades [for perfmnce-not race or street]

I bought new stock tires January, and when I drove it, The steering wheel was wobbily around 45. I rotated it, and it seemed less, ended up exchanging tires. Definitly the tires.

The problem has probably already been identified above...the tires or the wheels out of balance, but you just might want to make sure that all of your lug nuts are tight. I've seen it happen before.

I'm guessing you mounted the tire/wheel package on your car yourself and didn't re- torque the lugs on your aftermarket wheels.

i have hard time thinking it wheels or tires since it happens when braking and not when driving. if a wheel is out of balance or a tire is out of round it will vibrate at speed all the time, not just when the brakes are applied.

rotors can warp in 15k. hell i got new brembo blanks back in october and i warped them.
