Default spare keys

I recently bought a 2000 2dr accord. It only came with one key. I went to a Honda dealership and they said that it was $70. He said the reason why it's so expensive is because we have to program it. Some kind of anti-theft device in the key. Is there a cheeper way to get another key made? $70 is a little high for a spare key.

No, you can only get one from the honda dealer because of the chip inside the key for the anti-theft device. But my Honda dealer charged only $25 for the spare one:thinking:

Yeah it is really expensive. Although $70 is probably about $20 too much. I'd say the average price for one of the new "chip" keys is about $50. I would recomend finding another Honda dealer in your area. If there are no other dealers, I'd say your best bet is to find another dealer the next time you go on a road trip and just drop in. It only takes about 5 minutes for them to program and cut a new key.

you could always buy a blank chip key from ebay, they have them once in awhile for like $30. just take the key to the dealer and they should do it for free. all they have to do is program and cut. just tell them u got the key from another dealership because i think its illegal to have blank chip honda keys...

The key is only 13 bucks and they charge you about 8 to 10 dollars to program the key. That's how much I paid for my keys. The key has the immobilizer chip in it and it shouldn't be more than 25 bucks to get one made and programmed. They should have a sign that says 25 dollars for copying keys with a immobilizer chip, the Honda dealership I go to does. You should go to a different dealership.

I paid about $45 dollars at Honda of El Cerrito in Cali. I thought that was expensive. They are trying to rip you off man.
