Why does my automatic shift at 6,000 instead of redline?

I would never do it because it's pointless and more wear. Your original post just sounded as if it is catastrophic to do so, and I wanted to point out the differences in redline and fuel cutoff, and why there is such a difference.

just because mapping sounds like a good answer and tends to be the consensus doesn't mean it's right... mapping doesn't change over time... you don't have wear and tear on mapping... still feel smart?
and you still haven't ruled out the possibility that their maybe something wrong with your car or maybe it's just general wear and tear from you dumping on the gas all the time...
and i have yet to find a car that will go into first gear at that speed... if you know of one, tell him to change his trans...

wow...............a really long thread huh? can I ask something real quick? Say, for some honda cars, such as accord, the max torque and HP you achieve is about 4500 RPM and after. Would it be slower if you decide to shift it at 6000+ since it would cause a huge RPM drop between gears?
I thought shifting near readline on auto tranny would help at first, but some how, After many tries, I found out that it actually make my car slower than when i shift at 5000-5500 RPM.
I've tried it many time, on my hybrid and my gf 94 stock. The engine just ROAR louder at 6000 RPM and the car is slower as if its speed is dropping. When I shifted at about 5000 RPM, it doesn't roar at all and felt like the car just get boosted????

the reason we rev higher than our peak is so when we shift the engine is revving on the incline of the powerband on the next gear if not the peak... i hope that makes sense...

yes, mapping can and does change for each gear... so what's the problem? you wanted possibilities and that's what you got... why are you complaining? because someone said that there may be something wrong with your car? when you run hard you risk that chance...
maybe your accord doesn't like you anymore... lol...

Except for cars with sport shift (like preludes or the sport mode on regular bimmers) where the computer actually checks the rpm of the gear your downshifting into, you you can overrev a manual or automatic by dropping down too many gears....I believe you can overrev on the Ferrari clutchless setup and I'm positive you can with SMG on the M3 despite it being monitored by the computer...fuel cutoff will not save you at this point....
