Default Driving An Automatic Like A Manual?

I read in the driver's manual about driving an automatic car like a manual without a clutch?

What do you guys think?

The gears are obviously:

D4
D3
2
1

Would I start off in 1 to get the most pickup or what?

HELP! Never driven a stick. But realy like the idea of driving an automatic like a manual. When I test drove a Prelude the sport shift was friggin' awesome!

I sometimes go D3->D4, but I am not sure if it is good/bad for the car. :dunno: Here is a thread:

This isn't a sportshift. Some people that have done it have reported problems with their transmission. Just leave it in D4 bro, and drop the tranny down when you need to hold a gear for a corner. You'll go faster and you won't put your transmission in danger.

But props on reading the owners manual, I thought I was the only one

Yeh I wouldn't do it either... I mean technically you could hold the gear in place longer but I would assume wear on the tranny... not worth it... its fine to go 3-4-3....so on tho... I do it all the time for hills and cornering and what not... theres a reason you have to push the button for 1 and 2 but not 3.

well it cant be that bad, considering it says you can do it in the owners manual. If you shift at proper RPMs and no not downshift with it, its perfectly fine. but then you might as well leave it in D4.

exactly... theres no point in doing it unless you are redlining it... which should happen when you floor it anyways.

doing that will only cause extra wear on your tranny..... going D4-D3 is ok if your going up hills, cornering, and have extra weight or towing something in your car. why dont u just swap a manual tranny if u want that 5 speed feel.

All you will do is mess up your tranny. I have messed around with it. In my opioion 1st has the best pick up, Since Im swapping out the engine I really dont give a **** about my tranny right now. Already Re-Built it once, dont give for the engine/tranny anymore. So I usually hit 1st and skip 2nd and go to 3rd when Im havin fun. The Vtec Screams in 1st. Its fun stuff going down hills and ****. But In my opioion dont mess with it unless your ready to swap it. Ive heard that 0-50 you should stay in D3 and hit D4 around there. You will know when to shift from hearing and reading the engine..Latz
