Default CEL question 91 EX 5SPEED/MT...

First set of codes were 2 and 17, oxygen sensor, and speed sensor. The oxygen sensor was replaced but the speed sensor wasn't. So theoretically I would still get a CEL, no? The thing that concerns me is the engine idles rougher once the CEL comes on. Mechanic said it was motor mounts, compression test came back good after a different mechanic said I was running on 2 cylinders. Any suggestions?

91 Accord EX 225k.

Default Checked the CEL codes...

And now I got a 17-VSS, as expected, and a 41 - O2 sensor curciut. Is that indicating I got bad O2 sensor? I installed a Bosch. CEL usually comes on coasting/braking in gear and then I notice a roougher idle at stops. Any suggestions?

Code 41 is for the heater in the O2 sensor. Unplug the sensor & use a multi-meter to measure the resistance between the 2 same-color (black?) wires of the sensor. Should be 10 to 40 ohms. If that's OK, then the problem is in the wiring not the sensor. Look for loose/dirty/corroded connections.

Since it comes on coasting/braking, look for anything related to motion of the engine & exhaust pipe which might pull on the wiring. Especially since a mechanic said something about engine mounts...

I guess I can get the reader at any regular auto shop or do I need a speed shop for that? Also, I installed a Bosch, could that be the problem? I've heard mixed reviews of their products.

I've heard Hondas don't get along well with Bosch spark plugs, but haven't heard that about O2 sensors.

You read code 41 by the flashing CEL method? That's really the same way for any shop to do it.

Or are you referring to the multi-meter? That's RadioShack or someplace like that. Volt-Ohm-Ammeter, whatever. AutoZone has cheap ones too. Check electronics supply type stores for better meters.

Default Read the code

myself the 2nd time and got the 41. First time the shop, that said I need motor mounts, read it. That led me to replace the O2 sensor, based on the code they got and since I failed inspection because of emissions. I'm gonna pick up the instrument and check the voltage/amps/ohms tommorrow. I'll post the results.

Default Out of nowhere..

the speedometer and mileage gauge started working for about an hour until i shut her off. I think I'll try cleaning the contacts and what have you for the VSS since I don't have VSS replacement doe right now. The CEL didn't come on the whole time driving while the VSS was working. I'm gonna check the codes again to see if the 41 still shows up, as I haven't had a chance to check the O2 sensor again.

Default Failed emissions test again. . .

Said it was burning too much fuel. So I changed the plugs, and reset the ECU. No CEL on the test drive. Going back through inspection on Tuesday. I'll see how it goes.

Default Update...

Went through inspection the 3rd time and failed again. I used that GUARENTEED EMISSIONS crap and failed worse than the previous 2 times. So I pulled the O2 sensor and exchanged it because I kept getting a code 41. Cleaned all the termials and replaced, no code 41 any longer. I'm driving out the rest of that emissions crap and will try again next week. I'll address the VSS issue this weekend if it doesn't rain.

Default Finally!

Figured out why the CEL code 41 was coming up, or so it seems. I went to the muffler shop and and my muffler replaced on the advice of a family member. Reset the ECU and so far, 2 weeks, no CEL. Went back through inspection and failed barely, O2 threshold is .76 and I came in at .80, so I'm running som super and a bottle of injector cleaner and I'm gonna try it again Thursday. I guess the code 41 CAN be a lot of things.
