Mercon V equivalent of Dexron II?
My manual specifies Dexron II or Honda ATF. Does Mercon V transmission fluid supersede Dexron II? Or, are Mercon and Dexron fluids all together different?

mercon V does not work in place of dexron II
a standard transmission fluid is what you want ... dexron III is the current rating.
mercon V is for newer fords.
your best bet is to get the honda ATF fluid though, honda transmissions can be pretty finnicky about the fluid you put in them

There are extra silicates in Honda branded ATF. They lubricate seals and prevent corrosion. By switching, you lose the silicates and almost instantly generate leaks.

If you read the back of Advance Auto brand Mercon V, it specifies that is a replacement for Honda Z-1.

People who used other fluids than OEM have experienced transmission failure. Even the local Jiffy Lube won't drain and fill a Honda transmission.
What's the fight about here anyways? Is there cost savings?

MerconV $8.98 a quart ea
Honda ATF $6.22 ea
Even the "less expensive" brand that is recommended by the company that designed, manufactored, and tested your car is by far more superior to AMMACO's MerconV.
If you read in your manual Dexron ATF is only a TEMPORARY SOLUTION until you can get your hands on Honda ATF.
Honda's Marketing does work since most people on this forum have used the "other brand" and experienced horror stories due to them cheaping out on tranny fluids.
Long story short; either listen to us and use HONDA ATF tranny fluid or do it your way and get the "cheaper" brand.
Just be certain to put money aside for a tranny replacement.
